A study was conducted by the University of New Hampshire, which found that push ups stimulated more muscle fibers in both males and females than other strength training exercises such as leg curls and bicep curls when done daily for 12 weeks.

Amongst all other strength training exercises, push ups are among the best and safest for muscle hypertrophy in adults while being just as effective as high-intensity interval training (HIIT). This study found that all their participants lost weight during the 12-week study period, with the most significant amount of weight loss occurring among those who started at lower body weight (150 lbs.) and completed 12 weeks at heavier body weight (275 lbs.) than those individuals who started at a lighter weight and finished 12 weeks at a lighter weight.
